Hand-made racing exhausts

Is hand-made really better than machine-made?

Why hand-make exhausts?

With so many motorbike parts being precision-manufactured by machines, how can hand-fabrication provide better performance?

Simple. No two bikes are the same, and no two riders either. So no single machine-template can produce the optimal balance of top-end power and drive, nor can it second-guess your fuel, riding style or race conditions. Only an expert craftsman can do that. That's why you should use a specialist like Tony Green Racing.

Expansion chambers

In the early 80s Tony Green played a major role in developing expansion chamber design and engineering. To this day, he's one of the leading experts in pairing expansion chambers with engine performance. Tony has evolved his own prominent style in designing expansion chambers, largely based on a balance of pipe dimensions, gas-flow dynamics and meticulous fabrication.

Our fabrication process

1. Design

Following a detailed briefing on your race and riding preferences and an assessment of the bike, we custom-design the pipes. Then we modify our expansion chamber templates from our pattern library (possibly the largest collection in the world).

2. Hand Fabrication

We then cut new taper shapes and allow for a range of factors witrhin the forming process, including angle changes and metal stretch. Pumping the partially-formed pipes with oil can make for better exhaust flow, but only experience and iteration can define the right pressure and duration in this tricky process.

3. Fitting

We form and attach the brackets and fit the exhaust pipes to your machine, tucking them in for maximum ground-clearance and adding suitable mountings to eliminate unwanted vibration cracking and to improve aerodynamics.

4. Testing

After you've tested the bike, we can provide further development in our well-equipped Swindon workshop.
